International natural gas futures rose 52% this month to 35 euros (about 49,000 won) per megawatt hour, according to the Independent Commodity Information Service (ICIS).
Analysts attributed the price increase to a longer-than-expected maintenance work at Norway’s main gas plant, which halted production. Gasco, Norway’s gas power plant operator, said in a statement on Wednesday that the planned shutdown of one gas plant has been extended from June 21 to July 15, while two other gas plants will be suspended indefinitely due to process problems.

Currently, Europe has 73% of storage facilities, higher than the five-year average of 56%. In addition, Japan and Korea have also stored natural gas at record levels, and China’s economic recovery is weaker than expected, CNN said last summer’s price surge is unlikely to recur.
However, concerns over earthquakes caused by Norway’s gas plant shutdown and the Netherlands’ Groningen gas field shutdown have been a negative factor for the market.
Experts warned that an unplanned production halt could lead to a surge in prices, saying it does not take much change to shake traders’ confidence. Masimo Di Odoardo, a senior gas researcher, said the extension of closures at major gas plants in Norway “may reduce the supply of other bcm (1 bcm is 1 billion square meters) in the coming months,” adding, “It doesn’t take even 5 bcm to destabilize the market.”
