As a result, BP’s net profit was reported at a lower-than-expected level.
But in contrast, BP’s announcement of a $1.5 billion share buyback program and a 10% increase in dividends led to stock prices rising in pre-market trading in London and New York. The decision was announced as a policy to return 60% of its surplus cash flows to shareholders in 2023.
BP reported a significant drop in net profit and underlying replacement costs compared to the same period last year, when energy prices soared due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The company’s performance decline was the biggest among the four largest oil companies. Other large companies such as Exxon (XOM), Shell (SHEL) and Chevron also saw their net profits fall by less than half.
Oil and gas prices have been on a downward trend due to a decline in global oil and gas demand. Taking this into account, analysts expect BP’s stock may have passed its peak. The current stock price is 14% below this year’s high reached in February.
BP’s shares fared well on the London bourse, rising 1.2% in the morning. It also reported a 3.4% rise so far this year, outperforming Chevron (down 8.8%), Shell (up 2.3%), and Exxon (down 2.8%)
