According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 31st, First Solar is estimated to receive $710 million (about 907.25 billion won) in subsidies, nearly 90% of its operating profit estimate this year, which is expected to increase the company’s value to more than $10 billion over the next decade.
Pavel Molchanov, a renewable energy analyst at Raymond James, said, “Many companies are looking for a subsidy boom in industries such as solar, battery, and lithium mining, but First Solar is unique in terms of the amount of subsidies currently available.” Since a year ago, the United States has implemented a subsidy program to encourage renewable energy production.
First Solar has received subsidies due to lobbying with the government and having factories in the United States. The solar module business has tended to move production to Asia, including China, for many years because of its price competition and low margin. However, First Solar has set up factories in Malaysia and Vietnam to lower production costs and lobby against the import of solar components into the United States.
